HM Revenue and Customs has extended the deadline for submitting self assessment tax returns until midnight on 1 February.
The extension came after the HMRC website fell victim to major technical problems on Thursday, originally the last day on which returns could be filed without incurring a penalty.
HMRC has now said that anyone who submits their return by midnight on Friday will avoid a fine.
A spokesman said: “HMRC’s self assessment online filing service has experienced technical difficulties this morning [Thursday] which has meant that some tax payers have experienced difficulties filing on-line.”
He went on: “HMRC takes any disruption of service very seriously and to reflect this no-one who files electronically or by paper by midnight Friday 1 February will face a penalty.”
HMRC added that their online service had returned to normal by Thursday evening and apologised for the inconvenience that had been caused taxpayers.
