The Chancellor, Alistair Darling, will deliver his first Budget on Wednesday 12 March, the Treasury has announced.
Mr Darling will present the Budget to the Commons at 12.30pm.
The Budget is likely to be set against a backdrop of volatile financial markets and a predicted slowdown in the UK economy.
Earlier this week, the Institute for Fiscal Studies said that the Chancellor would need to find an extra £8 billion in taxes if the government is to avoid breaching its own fiscal rules for the next five years.
