Taxpayers hoping to submit their self assessment tax returns online in time for the 31 January cut-off point found that the HM Revenue and Customs website was down on the morning of the final day.
People logging on to the Self Assessment Online section of the HMRC website were unable to access the relevant pages.
HMRC issued an apology for the inconvenience caused and promised to restore the system as soon as possible.
