Company Profile

Shorts was founded in 1890 and has grown to become one of the largest practices in the South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire area. Our 50 staff include qualified Chartered and Certified Accountants and members of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. We have a wide client base covering many aspects of activity, in the Chesterfield and Sheffield areas and further afield. Whatever the client's line of work, our aim is to develop an in-depth understanding of their business in order to offer sound financial advice. We believe our job is to provide ideas as well as accounts and to think about next year as much as the last.

Although our firm is completely independent, we are members of The CharterGroup Partnership which is a national network of independent regional firms of Chartered Accountants. In order to satisfy membership of CharterGroup we have to undergo extensive qualitycontrol checks and demonstrate a high professional standard.

John Bown John has extensive knowledge and experience in the field of owner managed businesses and he deals with many of our larger company clients. He also acts for several of the firms of Solicitors that we represent and has specialist skills in this field. John became a partner in the firm in 1968.

Peter Freeman was appointed as a partner in 1978 and is recognised as a specialist advisor to our clients in the medical profession with his membership of AISMA. Peter also offers specialist advice to our clients in the farming and motor retailing sectors, as well as having significant experience in dealing with Inland Revenue investigations.

Paul Beeson joined the firm in 1988 and became a partner in 1990. Paul’s client base is varied, however he specialises in owner managed businesses and he is actively involved in promoting the firm and winning new clients. Paul is a past President of the Sheffield & District Society of Chartered Accountants and is a current member of the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Chris Chambers joined Shorts from Grant Thornton in 1988. He is a Chartered Tax Adviser and became the Tax Partner in 1995. Chris is also a Chartered Financial Planner and is jointly responsible for running Shorts Financial Services LLP, our IFA business.

Howard Freeman joined the firm as a partner in 2003, having spent the previous eleven years at Coopers & Lybrand and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He joined the select band of Chartered Accountants who are also Chartered Tax Advisers when he passed the Institute of Taxation exams in 2004. Howard has extensive knowledge of auditing and also leads the firm’s Forensic Accounting work.

ai Andrew Irvine joined the firm in April 2007 from PriceWaterhouseCoopers. He specialises in Due Diligence and heads our Corporate Finance Team. He has recently qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser to complement his status as a Chartered Accountant.

Andrew Grant is a Chartered Tax Adviser who brings over 20 years experience to the role. Andrew has worked extensively in the corporate owner managed business sector advising on all areas of tax planning including share incentive schemes, VAT and corporate restructuring.

James Brier is now semi retired, however his daily involvement remains as important to the firm as ever and his knowledge and experience is always available for his fellow partners, clients and staff.
